"Once upon a time, a little girl went out for a walk and into the woods.” This was the beginning of a story I wrote as a young child which my mother had kept and which I found after she died. Re-reading my story confirmed that the outdoors was where I wanted to take my work. I have always worked with children and young people (forty years and continuing), and my sense has always been that they have benefitted from being outdoors. This has included working at a Pupil Referral Unit where I was able to develop a garden where each young person was able to create their own plot.
After I trained as a counsellor and worked more with adults it became clear to me that being in nature heals in many ways. Working as an outdoors activities instructor provides a frequent reminder of this. Also true for me, the outdoors provides a sense of calm and connectedness for my ADHD and my adoption identity.
When I had completed a course on ‘taking therapy outside’ in Shining Cliff woods I went on to do the year long ‘Ten Directions’ Buddhist Ecotherapy training with the Tariki Trust.
I am able to offer counselling and ecotherapy indoors or outdoors with individuals and groups of all ages at the Elephant Rooms.
